The Bible pt.2
There is hardly a book more mis-understood, mis-quoted, mis-used, and/or ignored by Christians than the Bible. Of course now that we are “New Testament Christians,” **sarcasm here** we no longer have to feel bad about not reading that boring part called the Old Testament. That sure takes a load off the ole’ guilt train! Problem is, that could not be more wrong. So I guess the question is, since Jesus showed up with all the teaching, healing, and walking on water stuff, why the Old Testament? He ripped on the religious leaders, the very people that believed in and held to the Old Testament, called them hypocrites, brood of vipers, and a few other rather insulting things. All this evidence would seem to indicate that the Old Testament is no longer needed.
Problem is, along with all that confrontation Jesus was having with the religious ruling class, He kept asking pesky little questions, and making statements like, “Have you not read the Scriptures?” and, “If you understood your Scriptures…”. Then comes the bombshell, “I have not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it.” Wait, that means that if Jesus came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets (what we call the Old Testament), then it still has to be “in play.” We, in fact, do have to consider the Old Testament.
Let’s go one step further, without the Old Testament, you cannot rightly understand Jesus’ actions, words, deeds, even existence. Come Sunday and discover the reasons why this is so.
