Forrest Gump’s Great Question…
Have you discovered your purpose? Do you even believe you have a purpose? I do. I not only believe I have a purpose, but I believe you have a purpose. Be that as it may, most people are lost; both in terms of needing salvation, although that is not the point here, and in terms of finding their purpose. Maybe you identify with Forrest Gump when he asked his Momma, “What’s my purpose?” Finding the answer to this complex and lofty question seemingly requires years of school, reading piles of psycho-babble books, and years of therapy. What if it’s not that complicated? What if our purpose is not only easily discovered, but easily understood? Could you accept it? Remember, we often reject the simple because we assume that something like a “purpose” must be complex.
Read the story of Mary and Martha in Mark 10:38-42 and pay attention to the difference between these two women; one is distracted, the other is not. One is doing, the other is sitting. One has found her purpose, one has not. The irony is, Martha asks Jesus for help believing she has it right, while missing the truth that He is, or should be, her purpose. Martha thinks she is doing the right things, but it is actually Mary that has it all figured out. How many of us are missing the point in the quest for our purpose? Is it possible that our purpose is simply Jesus? Just sitting and relaxing at His feet? No religious creeds, no “have to’s,” just Jesus. Could it be that simple? If it is, can you accept it?
