…as we worship (so we think)…

Remember the first time you felt that feeling of awe? You didn’t dare speak to her, or him…but you desperately wanted to. They could do no wrong, they floated, walking was for “lesser” people. Their very presence sent chills through you, yet you dare not speak to them. What was that? Even in Jr. High, that since of longing to simply be in the same room, walk the same path, dare I suggest, even have them talk to you? was intense. That, is good ole’ fashion worship. We learn it very early, because it’s natural. Sadly, the entire concept of the human capacity, and natural reaction of worshipping something or someone has been high jacked and baggage laden by religious assumptions and religious practices.

Reality is, nothing more is required for the act of worship than an item or person to be worshipped, and a person to do the worshipping. For example; before my wife and I started to date, I worshipped her, and she had no clue and probably didn’t care. But I worshipped, none the less. My worship of her required nothing on her part, and nothing external on mine; no words, no expressions, no exchange, just a simple sense of awe. We all do it with something or someone.

In the Bible, however, the idea of worshiping God is quite different than a simple sense of awe - though it certainly begins there. Sadly, we have reduced it to music and then have the nerve to bicker over instrumentation and style. We even go so far as to dispute whether the words are read on a screen or from a book! How did we get so off track on issues not only irrelevant, but completely off the topic? With Worship being one of our non-negotiable Core Values, these questions are exactly what we will deal with.
