The Real Man.
Will the real men, or man, in America please stand up? Oh wait, don’t bother because we don’t have agreement on what defines a “man”. It used to be simple; there were men and there where women. There have always been gay men, but they still fit the broader societal definition of a “man”. I’m not referring to the subcategories that just go with a community such as; biker, athlete, contractor, etc.. just the basic every day, ordinary being a man – how is it defined?
As I grew up, I remember my grandpa saying something like, “Suck it up and be a man.” Today that would be considered emotional abuse. I’m not that old, but I remember when men did not respect other men when they did not care and provide for their family. Men demanded that other men had, maintained, and worked with pride at a job. Now? I don’t see any evidence of that expectation unless I’m talking to someone over, let’s say, fifty or so. So, what now? I refuse the entire “Metro-sexual” concept, and now the “hipster” label; both are ridiculous categorizations and silly definitions of just one “type” of guy (we hardly even use the word “man” anymore).
Our society is simply too complex to say a “man” is defined this way; although, there are those that certainly try. Overly “Macho” guys are still around, and so are all the other definitions of what a “man” is. I also don’t hear anyone talking about God’s “definition” of what a man should be. Do we care? Even Christians, do you care what God says makes a man? We do! Listen in and find out what the Bible says defines a real man.
