Wisdom Seekers - pt.2
…so, back to our seeking of wisdom. I said last time that the “self-help” isle in a book store was more of a monument to human arrogance, that’s partially true. The Bible teaches that there are two kinds of wisdom regarding moral truth; wisdom from below (what people can figure out on their own), and wisdom from above (wisdom that is given from Jesus – found in the Bible). I’m referring to moral truth, wisdom that governs our affairs and day to day living, and leads us to do the right thing.
So, why don’t we seek (or pursue) the getting of wisdom that is above our own level of reasoning? Proverbs says that we are to search for wisdom as we would lost treasure (money), but a simple look around would tell any observer that we are not doing that. Why? Maybe it’s because when we truly seek wisdom that is from above (from Jesus and God’s Spirit of Truth, as Jesus called it), we will discover that there actually is a non-movable, constant, moral truth that defines right from wrong. If we accept that, then we also have to accept that the definer of right from wrong is not us. If that’s true, then all our rationalizations for all the selfish things we do falls apart. In the light of wisdom from above, the rational – lies that we tell ourselves simply don’t stand up, they are nothing more than “smoke and mirrors”.
The true seeker of wisdom finds it in the person of Jesus. What follows is not condemnation, but clarity, then the freedom to really live life. The seeking of wisdom, as the Bible calls us to do is not so that we will live under the burden of “fun-less” rules. But that we might be free from the destructive drive of our own selfishness. What is it that you really seek, and where do you go to find it?
